Marie Courtin Eloquence 2018
Tasting Note
'The 2018 Champagne Marie Courtin “Éloquence” Blanc de Blancs is crafted entirely from chardonnay, with the vines ranging from fifteen to twenty years of age and farmed biodynamically. The vins clairs are partially barrel-fermented and the wine is non-dosé. The 2018 version was disgorged in November of 2023. The wine’s aromatic constellation is lovely, wafting from the glass in a complex blend of pear, apple. brioche, white flowers, a beautiful base of chalky soils and a deft touch of buttery oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and youthful, with fine depth of fruit and soil signature, a good spine of acidity, frothy mousse and a long, well-balanced and youthfully complex finish. The ripeness of the fruit in 2018 gives this wine a structural generosity in its relative youth that makes its non-dosé personality a bit more generous out of the blocks. But, the wine is still quite primary on both the nose and palate, so even though the acids are not too brisk, the wine still deserves some cellaring time, just to let those secondary layers of complexity start to unfold. The 2017 Éloquence is far more developed today and is the superior option for current drinking, though this 2018 may ultimately nose it out qualitatively with a bit of bottle age!'
