Chateau Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape 1979
Tasting Note
'It has been more than a decade since I last saw the 1979 Rayas, and the wine continues to drink beautifully. This is a slightly more delicate style of Rayas, with a stunning bouquet of crushed raspberries, red cherries, cloves, sandalwood, woodsmoke, summer truffles, coffee, orange rind, cedary wood and a topnote of roses. On the palate the wine is medium-full, sweet and silky, with beautiful resolution, still great intensity, and a long, complex, peacock’s tail of a finish. In terms of aromatics and flavors this is not far off the legendary 1978. It is a shade less powerful, but can also be found for a fraction of the 1978’s price. A lovely wine at its peak, but with years of life ahead of it.'
