'Madame Barthod’s 2020 Chambolle villages is truly exceptional in the vintage, as the wine couples great purity and precision with that same sense of sappiness to the fruit that is extremely appealing. The nose wafts from the glass in a blend of plummy fruit, black cherries, gamebird, dark chocolate, a fine base of chalky minerality, gamebird, woodsmoke and a deft touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and again nicely transparent, with farm more soil complexity than in the very good Bourgogne, a lovely core of fruit, suave tannins and a long, precise and sappy finish.'
