Pierre Overnoy Arbois Pupillin Poulsard 2010 Magnum
Tasting Note
'Bottled already in early summer, the Houillon-Overnoy 2010 Arbois-Pupillin Poulsard reinforces the notion that Pupillin – this grape’s alleged capital – and this estate in particular have special talent with Poulsard. Lovely scents of hibiscus and flavors of rose hip accent the cherry fruit. A silken texture reinforces the allure of generous fresh cherry fruit of the sort that characterizes Poulsard. Pungent herbal elements including sweet basil add interest without in any way suggesting under-ripeness, and this finishes with infectious juiciness. The sense of levity, polish, and sheer refreshment argues for not missing out on this wine over the coming year, but, as at least one older Overnoy Poulsard I had occasion to taste suggested, this wine might well age nicely for several years. (The 2011, incidentally – while slightly reduced – was already generously fruit-filled last November. According to Houillon and Overnoy, incidentally, traditionally Poulsard was thought to require the second winter to clarify so that it could be bottled.)'
